A History of Giving
Since the early 1990’s and before the inception of today’s non-profit The Challenger Foundation, Challenger Sports was working every year to donate valuable equipment, soccer balls, and uniforms to soccer-based charities, schools, orphanages, and missions across Central and South America and Africa, while also supporting national and international community outreach programs. What began as a simple belief—that access to sport can open doors for young people—has quietly shaped decades of meaningful work around the world.
Long before “impact” became a buzzword, Challenger’s coaches, staff, and families were finding ways to help. Extra cleats were packed into suitcases. Gently used jerseys found new life on fields thousands of miles away. Soccer balls were shared with communities where equipment was scarce but enthusiasm was limitless. These early efforts were not part of a formal foundation or strategy; they were acts of care driven by relationships, trust, and a shared love of the game.
Over time, those efforts grew. Partnerships deepened. The reach expanded. What remained constant was the belief that sport is more than recreation—it is a connector. It brings children together, teaches confidence and teamwork, and provides a sense of belonging that transcends language, culture, and geography. Whether in a rural village, an urban schoolyard, or a refugee community, a ball at someone’s feet can change the shape of a day—and sometimes a future.
The Challenger Foundation was eventually formed to give structure and longevity to this work, but its heart has always been the same. The Foundation exists to ensure that young people everywhere have the opportunity to play, to grow, and to feel seen. That mission has been made possible through the generosity of donors, partners, families, and volunteers who believe that giving back is part of moving forward.
The impact of that generosity is best told through the voices of those on the receiving end. One partner, Oceans of Mercy, shared the following after receiving donated equipment:
“I just wanted to thank all of you one more time for your incredibly generous donations. We were able to fill up 16 suitcases filled with cleats, balls, jerseys, shorts, shinguards, socks, cones and sweatshirts. The response was overwhelming. Last month, Oceans of Mercy was able to deliver the gear. Thank you for taking the time to get in touch with me and for delivering the goods. Thanks again and best of luck to all your kids in their upcoming Spring soccer season.”

Stories like this are not rare—they are the result of consistent, collective effort over many years. They represent children stepping onto a field for the first time with proper footwear, teams finally training with cones and balls of their own, and communities feeling supported rather than forgotten.
As we reflect on our history since 1990, we do so with gratitude and humility. None of this work happens in isolation. It happens because parents choose to give back, partners choose to collaborate, and donors choose to invest not just in programs, but in people.
The Challenger Foundation’s story is still being written. And as it always has been, it is written together—with every suitcase packed, every partnership formed, and every child given the chance to play.
